skype and phoning via the net Four GoldenYak (tm) award

“[...] the conversations are encrypted, which means that unsavoury types will find it rather harder to bug than normal telephone calls. it is also considerably cheaper than using the telephone, especially with international calls.”

The Skype internet telephony system is clearly superior to Microsoft’s offering, NetMeeting. Connection and reception are effective, thus making conference calls comfortable.

A microphone costing a few dollars and a cable that links your computer audio output to the hifi system gives better quality communications than a telephone handset.
