Ehrlichs’ latest summary of global overload
“ Oil and car companies cultivate desires for bigger cars; fundamentalists
condemn not only abortion but even contraception; developers will build on
any land they can secure, using any resources they can find.
“In such a zeitgeist, overpopulation and all its problems remain
abstractions to most of us in the affluent sectors of the world. "The
assumption seems to be that the rich nations can somehow become the global
equivalent of a gated community." For the Ehrlichs it all adds up to a
collective "death wish," leading to "ecological suicide," but "in the end,
even the well-buffered rich will pay a huge cost." How to avoid disaster?
The Ehrlichs devote their final chapters to proposed remedies. Here they
admittedly "crawl out on some shaky limbs" in proposing new taxes for
discouraging rather than subsidizing childbearing, moderating
globalization and "free trade," regulating corporations and putting
environmental issues in the forefront of education and policy at all
levels.”
