Motorway aires are designed to provide a suitable environment for relaxing, refreshing and recovering during the long, hard journeys. As well as facilities of often dubious nature, picnic tables and seats, a telephone kiosk, there are often optional extras such as a play area or a display related to some local interest or event.

aire de garonne

Many large motorway aires are franchised from the major petrol companies, such as Total or Esso. However, major French supermarket chains have bought into motorway aires, and every so often you will find an aire that is run by, say, Carrefour or Leclerc.

This Leclerc aire is a pleasant surprise, being clean inside and out, and well-appointed. And the prices are slightly lower than those in other aires with shopping and fuel.

Here is a picture essay of the Aire de Garonne:

toulouse

Toulouse is the fourth largest city in France, after Paris, Marseille and Lyon. It has a strong aerospace industry, manufacturing both the Airbus passenger craft and Ariane space rockets.

Toulouse is known as la Cité Rose - the Pink City - on account of the distinctive pinky-red bricks used for muchof the town architecture.

Toulouse is known as the City of violets. Violets were first introduced in St Jory, to the north-west of Toulouse, in the 19th century.
The Toulouse Football (soccer) team is nicknamed The Violets!
